Cot Bedding

With the birth of my first child impending (9 and a half weeks till due date), I am going to be putting her into a Moses Basket for a while at first and then into the Cot, My questions is this:
I have been buying cot bedding sets so that when the time comes I have it ready, yet on the quilts that come in these sets, they say not suitable until 12 months, so what exactly am I supposed to cover my baby with until she is old enough to have these? The fleece blankets that also come with the sets? or something else completely different?

Short answer, yes, you can also buy the blankets (sure they're called waffle blankets?) separately, though don't be tempted to pile loads on the little mite!

my daughter always kicked any blankets off so she never slept in a made bed (sheets and blankets) until she was 2 or 3 (can't remember - she is 7 now). Instead she used to wear a babygro and a fleecy babygro over that (she was born in november). However it sounds like your baby is due in the summer and babies do not need to be kept too warm in case they overheat so personally, in warm weather, I would just put baby down in a cotton baby gro.

i have always used cellular blankets, they recommend you use 2 of those and a simple sheet to cover your baby, if you have a wriggler you may be better getting the baby gro bags, little sleeping bags, they sell them in different tog ratings and are good for squirmy babies!

You can also buy baby sleeping bags (gro-bags), my two slept in these from about the time they moved into the cot. Found them ideal. I have one that has two layers so it can be warmer in the winter time and it also has detachable arms which we've used in the winter. Advantage is they can't kick them off, disadvantage is that you need to be sure they're not going to get too hot in the night through central heating etc.

Good luck with the birth and early baby days and weeks - try and enjoy it!!, it's a really special time.

We've used nothing but baby-gro's for our baby since birth (he's only 4 months now). The main advantage is that he can't kick them off & there's no chance of him wiggling down the bottom of his cot & getting his head covered with blankets. If you feel up to it and have the time & patience, hunt them down in TK Maxx - you can save a small fortune!

Agree re the gro bags....totally brilliant. And stoo-pid, you're right TK Maxx is so worth checking! We got loads there in all togs and sizes (you get low tog summer ones). My wee guy has never once woken cold during the night, and is still happy in his at 2.5 yrs old. They can't slip down inside them, adn no matterhow restless your wee bundle is, they can't kick them off. I think they're a great invention and will definitely use them if baby no. 2 comes along.

Hi Emma -J, the advice that you have been given is all good. We had our baby, nearly 5 old months now, sleeping in his moses basket, (swaddled as he wouldn't settle without being tightly bound!) with an additional cellular blanket over him until he outgrew basket at 4 months, but that was in the cold winter months.

Now he is in his big cot he is more active & we are using grow-bags (doesn't need swaddled now). We were given an expensive one (over �30) and one from Asda that cost �10 & to be honest the cheaper one is just as good as the dearer one.

We put our wee one down to sleep at 6.30pm just in a long sleeved babygrow (romper suit?) as the room is a bit warner then & when we feed him at 11 we put him in the grow bag to keep him cosy through the night & so far it is all working well.
