Mossusdum Contagiosum

The doctor has diagnosed my boys with Mossusdum Contagiosum but I can't find out anything about it - any ideas? Thanks.

Do you mean Molluscum Contagiosum, which is raised spots on the skin which seems quite resistent to treatment?

My elder son has had this twice (the first time it was only one spot) whilst apparently you can only get it once.

They are raised spots a bit like warts but if you scratch them there is a cheesy substance underneath. You should try not to scratch them as they can easily become infected.

My son had them over his torso and backs of legs. There were about 20 in all and they did make me feel a little queasy but he was not bothered by them - he was 4 at the time.

They went on their own (there is no treatment although calamine can be used if one gets inflamed - eg is on the trouser waist band, or one gets the top scratched off). I think they went after 6 months.

My younger son did not catch them at all. They are a viral wart if my memory serves me correctly.

Have contacted the doctors again and they now say it is Molluscum Contagiosum but the symptoms don't seem to fit. The spots are more like big chicken pox spots but they dry up over night. The don't seem to itch but they are looking redder each time they get new ones.

You could always get a second opinion sherrardk, doctors dont always get things right first time. My daughter had molloscum on her bottom when she was in nappies and the first doctor I saw said it was thrush. After using cremes for a couple of weeks I had to take her back, saw a different doctor who diagnosed Molloscum. He told me it wasnt treatable, dont know if other people were told the same. It did clear up when she came out of nappies. If your unsure about anything, then see another doctor. I do remember that the spots were quite big and some where red and some had "heads" on them like acne spots.

Hello Maggie-Mae - this was the second opinion, the first said it was bites!

My daughter had this quite badly when she was about 6 or 7. Try and leave it alone and it will go of its own accord.

I took her to the doctor and she stuck pins in some of them which was traumatic and pointless. She has a few timy scars now but is fine!!
