The only time I have heard it used was in the Smurfs - it was Gargamel's scruffy little cat who was always up to no good ! Probably not the answer you were looking for but I haven't heard the name used anywhere else. Mind you , I called my youngest daughter Holly and since then I seem to hear lots of people out calling on their dog and guess what , it's Holly they are shouting. That's far too pretty a name to be used on a dog lol !

http://www.adorablebabygifts.com/baby_names.ht m - why not try here for an unusual name. It also provides info on the most popular names spanning the decades.

Good luck with whatever you decide x
I think it's a gorgeous name but I thought it was a boy's name.It was used in the film Dogma for one of the Demons and i always thought that Azrael usde to be an angel and fell from Grace for supporting Lucifer. Might be wrong though.
Sounds too much like Israel
A beautiful name with dark connotations...

Likewise, another name which falls into this category is that which translates as "bringer of light"
Yeah, as kempie says, it's a nice name, but do you really want to name your child after the angel of death?
What about Ariel or Azaria as a similar alternative. I agree it's a pretty name but also wouldn't want to name my little girl after the angel of death!
I knew a little girl called Arazo don't know where its from but she was wonderful so I liked the name. :-)

Gertrude?
the only time i have heard it was the smurfs too.
but the cat was a girl cat.
it is a lovely name tho.
my eldest has a hebrew name too - Keziah
She'll have fun introducing herself to her future in laws;
'Hello, I'm Azrael, the angel of death. Are you well?'
My advice - when choosing a child's name,
look up the definition of the name,
make sure it doen't sound silly with the surname, or join to make a new word,
make sure the initials aren't going to spell something silly ......
and don't ask too many other people's opinions!
When you ask lots of other people, SOMEONE is bound to tell you they don't like it, no matter what name you're thinking of!
When I was choosing names, I had people saying "Oh no - don't call her that - I went to school with a girl with that name and she was a real bully / real cow / stole my boyfriend" - whatever!
PMSL @ Drusilla... I love the name!!! It is hebrew and means God is my helper, doesn't say anything about the angel of death though...!! ;o)
Does anyone think what the child may feel about their name when they get older. Some of these unusual names are just hideous. I feel sorry for the kids.
fifi trixibel , peaches and whatever the otherones are called
also moon unit, dweezil zappa. well you cant get any weirder than that. im all for different names like Xenia (pronounced zenia) and that but like the others said Azrael is the angel of death and although not everyone will know thats what it means it may give your daughter a complex when she gets older. Why dont you have it as a middle name? or why dont i just shut up and you call your child whatever you like.
Agree with naz-nomad. Sounds far too too much like Israel, and might become a target for the anti-semitics amongst us in later years. Who wants to sound as if they've been (virtually) named after a country?
