crisgal, try this recipe:-
4 cups flour
2 cups salt
6 teasps Cream of Tartar
2 tblsps
Combine all above, then add
4 cups of just boiled water.
food colouring.

If the water isn't hot enough, you can heat in microwave to mix. (maybe use 1/2 quantities to try it out first)
Hope this is ok for you.

2 tblsps ? oil?
Sorry!! yes OIL crisgal. Can't believe I missed that out ( and I had read over it too!!)
I seem to remember that it had to be plain flour. And that you needed to knead it when made.
When I made it with Playgroup we counted out the ingredients into a saucepan and stirred in the water as a group activity, I took it into the kitchen to cook it till the goo became a moist lump, then we all kneaded it.
Don't forget to sing to it at this stage - 'Pat-a-cake' as you pat it, or 'Theres a worm at the bottom of the garden' or '5 little sausages' as you roll it under your fingers to make snakes. Can't remember what we sang as we rolled it into balls with the palm of the hand.
Play dough is fun and its good to hide the rolling pin and pastry cutters sometimes.
