The main symptom to watch for is increased thirst. Drinking pint glasses of fluids etc. If your child is showing similar symptoms take them to the doctor, the blood glucose test which is the quickest will only take a minute or so and is pretty conclusive.

Even if your child has the condition, don't worry too much as it's relatively easy to treat and control and huge improvements are in the pipeline. A cure hopefully isn't too far away!!!
Please ignore mbireland, in a test for diabetes it would be a ketone test, that your Dr can do with a sample of urine with an instant result. Increased thirst (not necessarily from pint glasses), loss of appetite = weight loss, lethargy, increased need to go to the loo/possibly 'accidents' in the night.. Similar symptoms in children and adults. Diabetes in such a young child is nothing to be flippant about, you have to cross many bridges, but your sister may not even be diabetic! What is your situation, as I am experienced in childhood diabetes x
p.s. I am sorry I did not read this post earlier
The reason for the blood glucose test is that it produces reliable results. Ketone testing can be unreliable, however not to be ignored. There is a (small) chance that diabetes could remain undetected by using the urine ketone test.
