i am studying for a diploma in child care and was hoping that someone could explain the difference between development and learning in children? or could perhaps guide me to a site where it could be explained to a layperson.

The absolute best book I've seen on child development is by Helen Bee The Developing Child, it explains all the different theories in an easy way and is enjoyable to read rather than heavy work. How I see the difference is that development is the physical and cognitive etc growth at various ages that allow learning of various things to take place. E.g A child can't be taught to skip until physically they have developed their balance and co ordination and mind to a sophisticated enough level to be able to jump and turn a rope and count all at the same time.
Professor Winston who does Child of Our time on BBC may have a child development site he explains it very simply as well.
