Making up stories for children

I recently asked by our 6 year old daughter if I could tell her any stories as previously I had told her a couple but for once I was actually shocked to realise that I couldn't remember any stories.

Normally I can tell lots of stories off the top of my head.

Anyone else out there good at telling stories?

Hi, heres a good tip me and my other half used to tell each other silly funny stories when we had time to have lazy sundays, it works with kids too though- get your daughter to pick 3 or 4 things that you must use in the story, i.e
a crocodile with a pnk hat
a one eared cat
a man on stilts
kids will think of loads of odd stuff,lol
and then you have to make a story around them, she will be chuffed as its about what she said and it will be a real hodge podge and a laugh with her reminding you what you've missed out and asking why the characters are how they are-like what happened to the cats ear etc.
Just an idea,lol!! My 7 yr old stepdaughter loves it, and keeps her Dad's brain working too!

We have a hamster and I make up stories about the adventures he has when we are all in bed at night - this usually involves him escaping from his cage and maybe travelling in a hot air baloon to foreign lands, or finding a treasure map. He is a bit of a superhero. I usually start and then say and what do you think happened next? this usually sparks of the next bit of the story. You can substitute a favourite stuffed toy or doll if you don't have a pet.

I also found it very beneficial to read them stories from books with my boys looking on so that they could start to recognise the words - they are now just turned 7 and nearly six and both read very well themselves (at least 2 years ahead of average). Don't always feel that you have to make something up, there are lots of brilliant books out there to share - a love of reading is a gift to your child (and it is great for you as well - my boys now love a lie in at the weekend reading their Dandy and Beano - bliss!!!)

Hi annie, we are lucky in that she naturally loves books! She is actually 6 yrs old and a brilliant reader. She also has a brilliant imagination......I had to write a childrens story for the course I was doing and I got her to name the characters for me and let her have some input into it..... she loved it.....especially when I was able to read it to her when it was all finished :)
