I'd go for the option of none at all - just water or milk to drink and lots of fruit and vegetables with meals, read the labels of everything and go for natural rather than chemicals.

Hi, thanks for response. He does drink alot of water but dont want to cut out his sweets etc all together but know some 'e's are worse than others.
My 5 yr old has always been quite hyper and extremely bad tempered, His tantrums had us virtually house-bound. About two months ago I read an article about the use of fish oils in treating tantrums/hyperactivity and the feed-back was really positive. We decided to give it a go,so I bought some Omega 3 capsules in superdrug ( the cheapest I could find) and the results have been amazing, he is a completey different child. He is so contented and easy to reason with and the change happened within a fortnight of him starting to take the tablets. We had previously researched the whole 'e' number thing, but when we did, we discovered his intake was fairly low anyway. I would definitely recommend omega 3 but check with your gp before hand.
Smarties and jelly tots now use natural food colouring - hence why there is no more blue smarties!

Try this, I have the same problem with mine and he's having a very natural diet. Try Omega 3 capsules as well!
Even better than omega 3 capsules, give them fish to eat! Mine have always loved fish. make your own fish fingers with some mackeral or salmon using bread crumbs.
I dont really give mine things that have colours etc in them much but do not stop them completely. I think its having drinks like squash all the time and giving them sweets/treats every day that isnt good. I usually give treats after meals if its eaten all up or they tried something new. Or you can make smoothies and make them into ice lollys as well, my boy loves these and you can put any fruit in them. you dont need to add any sugar or sweet drink to them.
I do find that when my 4 yr old boy goes to a party he is very hyper after and much more difficult and even when i just let him have a lollypop, its not often he gets them so i really notice it. It can sometimes just be when he has something really sugary and not much else. so i always give water in the day and healthy snacks.
