Hi everyone - when did you stop using your baby monitor? My boy is 27 months and we still use it but its just about had it n we need a new one. I worry about him choking or something n not being able to hear him - this is for during the evening, we sleep in the room next door so I can hear him ok when I have gone to bed, but confess I sometimes turn up the volume just to make sure I can hear him breathing ok. Thanks x

its normal to be cautious but try not to overworry...unless he is in bed with a drink or anything he cold choke on there is no reason why he would spontaneously start choking...

I would get rid of the baby monitor and just check on him a couple of times in the evening for your own piece of mind.
we only stopped using ours when or you ngest arrived and we moved it to her room.
But we only have it switched on in our room when we got to bed so we can hear when she wakes.

our son is 3.5yrs and our daughter 10months.

I am obviously a terrible parent! I never used one at all. I think you will find that without it, you could hear a gnat pump 3 miles away! My hearing just became really acute when they were little. Both my boys shared our bedroom until they were one, but in the early evening I would just pop up occaisionally to check on them.

Weirdly enough, although I was quite happy fpr them to be sleeping upstairs when we were downstairs, I wasn't happy to use the downstairs bedroom for them to sleep in at night while we were upstairs sleeping. I always had a fear that if there was a fire I wouldn't be able to get to them downstairs, when really the same would happen if there was one before we went to bed.

I guess logic doesn't really come into it, you need to do what makes you comfortable, but certainly the likliehood of something happening to your toddler that you wouldn't hear without a monitor is probably minute.
im the same lol i didnt have one, but my daughter was also im our room, plus so far we have only lived in small places ( moving soon yipeeee)
thing is i hear everything, i used to be a heavy sleeper but as soon as i had my daughter it was like i was only ever half asleep, did anyone else get that???
i would hear her every move, litterally!! she never cried in the night ever because i would always wake up when she first started stiring and go make her bottle just in time for her to wake, i think its a personal choice tho to be honest, we are moving in 4 weeks to a 3 bed house and baby due in 7 weeks! so i will definatly be buying one this time, as im going to put her down in her own room from 6-8 months, and if she is upstairs in bed and im downstairs i defo will need one!! you can get ones where you can see the baby now?? hehe
I am with annie0000 as I too must be a dreadful parent. I never used a baby monitor but my hearing was brilliant and my feelings on the subject is that the damn things do make parents paranoid as poor upsydaisy is. They cause you to worry too much I think. I was a heavy sleeper but once there was a baby in the house I would wake just before feeds. It is like the instinct that tells you your toddler is eating the dogs dinner or flushing your best knickers down the toilet. Having babies is a licence for many people to print money, what is it with expensive muslins? I cut up old pillow cases and hemmed them, perfect . our mothers managed without so many of these modern day wonders, and we are all alive to tell the tale.
hi

have to say i'm very random with mine. i don't want to get to attached to it. have friends that are so used with using it and they still use it when there little ones are 3+

i dont use it during the day when she is having her naps. i can hear whats going on but i have it on just now when i'm sitting watching the tv.

Thanks for your replies - I dont think you are a bad parent if you don't have a baby monitor by the way!! I should've clarified that we live in a converted barn so the lounge is a long way away from the bedrooms. However - I should just trust my own instincts - the other night the little fella coughed so hard he was sick but didn't cry (I only know cos we had the monitor on, and he'd been sick all over the place) Paranoia Elaine?? Maybe, but I'm v glad we still use the monitor. x
well my son is 4 and his monitor is still in his bedroom, as like you the lounge is a bit away from the bedroom! its hidden away so he doesnt know its there! what does it matter its not harming anyone! i say keep it there till they leave home the you can hear what they get up to! LOL!
