Hi all

Can you get chicken pox more than once? I was called today by Baby Pickys nursery who said I needed to collect him as he was covered in spots. Couldn't get an appointment at my docs and after 2 attempts, the out of hours doc said they'd see him. I have never seen such a useless doctor in my whole life. He said "It might be chicken pox, but it might not, keep an eye on it" (this was not the only indication of his uselessness, but that's another story). I'm 3 weeks off giving birth and baby Picky has had 'the pox' before, so I wanted to make sure it wasn't anything hideous. But I'm none the wiser until I can see my own doctor tomorrow
Has anyone had chicken pox twice?

Thanks

yes- my doctor once told me there were 2 strains of chicken pox and it's possible to get 1 strain and then the other. Then he went on to say but you could have been misdiagnosed before.
Just read this on a chickenpox website:

Can you get chickenpox more than once?
Yes, but such occurrences are uncommon. For most people, one infection appears to confer lifelong immunity
Hi Picky

A friend of mine has had it twice as well as German Measles 3 times. so I would say yes you can get it more than once. Generally the second time is less severe than the first as your body has built up immunity the first time around.
I agree with your "useless" DR......if the diagnosis is not obvious then a policy of wait and see is admirable.

What other "hideous" skin disorder had you in mind?
My sister and her 2 kids have had it twice. Although the second time was much milder.

My Dad has never had anything.

Squad, I would probaby be more happy to 'wait and see' if I wasn't 37 weeks pregnant, already lost 2 babies in the past 12 months, stressed upto my eyeballs with worrying about my Mum after my Dad dying 8 weeks ago, grieving, not sleeping due to being so uncomfortable and now worrying about my baby. Didn't suspect a 'hideous skin disease', I just wanted some reassurance that it was nothing that could harm my child or my unborn baby which I don't think in unreasonble.

I felt the doctor was useless as he was so dismissive, didn't let us ask any questions, told me to lay my son on a bed that was covered in the same blue paper that had obviously been used by the previous patient and just did nothing to reassure us. We were in and out in about 45 seconds. That's why I felt he was useless.

Thanks for the productive, helpful answers which I got from everyone else.
Oooooooh!....you are stressed aren't you.

I think I will leave this to the "others" and keppm us "useless Drs" out of the thread.
hey Picky - sounds like things are pretty hectic for you right now. Hope that you are ok.
xx
Picky. It is definately possible to get it more than once.

I have now had C/pox 3 times, once when i was about 8, and twice as an adult.

Each time it has been pretty mild- think i've had a total of 14 spots! Not sure whether i am fortunate or not!

I was told that as i had it so mildly as a kid (like 3 spots!), i hadnt developed sufficient resistance to never get it again.
I'm just hoping i dont end up with Shingles next time!

Thanks all, most of the spots seem to have gone down, with one or two that seem to be sticking. I'll keep an eye on him .

Ooooooohhh, Squad, yes I am stressed, thanks for your concern and for "keppm" out of the thread.

Appreciated all as always, thanks again
