Boyfriend's ex is having his baby against his will

My boyfriend and his ex had a one night stand after they had been separated for a long time. She got pregnant. He told her there was no chance he would get back with her, he didn't want a child with her and she decided to go ahead and have the baby anyway.
She has hasselled him and me throughout.
My boyfriend will not be putting his name on the birth certificate, or be attending the birth. He does not want any contact with the child. He will pay maintainance for the child after a DNA test proves the child is his.
The mother of the baby is not happy about this, she wants him to be in the childs life and hers. The baby is due in the next couple of weeks.
What can my boyfriend do to make all of the above clear to her? Legally is there something he should be doing right now?

Thanks TonyTed, I probably would have said the same! but I'm in love with my boyfriend and we're going to get through this together, we just need to work out how to get her and the child out of our lives without shirking his legal duties as a father.

Brokenstoned - my boyfriend admits he has shared responsibility for creating this child - and will therefore pay maintainance, but he does not want to be a father. He made that very clear from the beginning. The mother knew this when she chose to follow through with the pregnancy, she knew her child would not have a father in it's life.

Tonyted - it was just a drunken mistake on his part, and she got pregnant.
I met him a couple of months ago and we're really happy together - I have no concerns abour being his girlf, and there is no way I would even consider bringing a child into the world unless I could provide for it, so I would never be in the same situation as this girl.

She didn't get pregnant.....THEY created a child, he owes it to the child to help them grow and develop. Apart from helping finance the child, he has no obligation to the mother.

Seems to me Polly that you would both prefer that this child and the mother would disappear and stop incoveniencing the pair of you. Its not "the" child, its your boyfriend's child, do you really want them to grow up without ever knowing their father?
