We all know that with daughters, They're our little princess's and we treat them accordingly but with boys its natural to be a bit more rough and tumble with them, Do you and if you do play rough with them and if so what was the age of your boy when you decided to teach him roughplay? And do you think that roughplay is teaching him violence or do you think that its necessary to teach them to toughen them up?

I think children are children not princesses or otherwise! Rough play is fine as long as it is a game! Not teaching them to fight..or toughen up. Ultimately if you have a sensitive child, boy or girl, they are that way. Trying to make them otherwise may cause them stress. Accept your kids for what they are..p.s.girls and boys enjoy rough play equally!
p.s why are you asking!!!
Ermm,m I'm unsure what you mean by rough play too?

I'm not a massive fan of rough lpay to be honest, all to often it can get out of control and the child unintionally gets hurt. Also I don't think it's a brilliant idea to let your child wallop you one and think that its acceptable, not to mention vice versa.

And, seriously...little girls are princesses? Believe me, they're every bit as boistrous and rough as boys.
It is believed that because boys brought up by single mums do not get the rough play that they would with their dads, they never learn to impose their own limits. IE they don't know when to stop. This is one theory about the increasing levels of violence displayed by adolescent boys.
My son plays rough with his sons ie they punch him hi5s while he guages strength. I offered middle 7y old boy honey & lemon 'cough mixture' that he didn't like. He refused to take & when I handed it to him to swallow the wimp began bawling.

If his parents weren't there he'd have got a swift whack from me! Disappointed :(
Rough and tumble, football, etc.....about 4yrs old.
I hope your post is tongue in cheek there Tambo?
maggott? That theory is sexist rubbish..it is saying that all men play rough with their boys..some dads don't some dads do....adolescent boys are getting worse because of many things but i don't believe for a second it is to do with rough play!!!
I probably played rougher with my boys than their dad did, but then he was the main carer and tended to be more over protective, whereas I used to look forward to a good wrestle and throw about with them when I got home from work. They are disappointed that I can't dangle them upside down anymore (they are too tall and heavy!!!). Now that they are a bit bigger, my husband is probably more physical with them. They like to play a game where he gets them in a wrestling hold (actually one of the holds he used to restrain violent patients!) and they have to get out and be the first to reach the light switch. I wouldn't include hitting in any games though, I don't think that is part of rough play. I think it helps when they take up rugby and judo etc to be used to physical contact. I agree that girls can enjoy it just as much.
