It's probably best to work out a parenting technique each person agrees on as to not confuse the child. Or at least back each other up.

Think I can sorta help here.  My parent style is pretty laid back I don't yell or smack.  And I absolutly do not punish for everything.  Guess you could say I choose my battles wisely.  My hubby is more the go to your room, and shouts if something is bad for example "WHY WOULD YOU DRAW ON THE CHAIR".  I'm more "Well you should really clean that up, it makes the house look dirty"

Oh so to the point we have found ALOT of techniques in a book called "Family First"  Its perfect, it is at first alot of quiz's to see what your individual parenting style is (for you and partner) and then what type of child(ren) you have whether be aggresive passive etc,,,then gives hints on how that individual child should be disaplined and treated in general.  So in some cases both techniques of both parental figures need to be adjusted in order to have a steady running home where everyone gets what they want more or less.. It took some getting used to for the hubby to not be so quick to shout, but now that we understand our children more it is alot easier.  Hope that helps.
