Carpet odour from wee

My 3 year old has had occasional spillages on the carpet whilst using her potty (missed the protective covering as well). Despite my scrubbing the carpet numerous times by hand I can't get rid of the odour: would a carpet cleaner do the job better? It costs £25 per weekend to hire but it's only a small bedroom. Would a different floor covering be better and if so what type?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

We use Oust 3 in 1 spray to get rid of the smell of cat wee - worth a try, about £3 for a can.

You might do better with a carpet cleaner, but depending on the quality of the carpet if you have a wet and dry vacuum cleaner you could use that instead. The issue is that every time you add water to clean it, it is driving some of the wee-stained water yet further into the carpet pile and backing. So, alternately giving it some cleaning water, then immediately extracting this either with a carpe cleaning machine or a wet n dry vac will start to bring out the wee.
Alternatively use lots of dry towels and trample them into the affected area each time you wet it with cleaner and water, so the water and wee is soaked up into the towels. I mean really A LOT of towels. Give these a good hot wash immediatley after and no harm will come.

get the carpet up and put down cheap floorboards. you can always cover with rugs which you can then wash if needs be...x

Head off to your nearest branch of Pets at Home. They'll sell you a bottle of 'Simple Solution Stain & Odour Remover', which will get rid of the smell.

I am potty training my daughter at the moment and i use fabric softner to get the smell of wee out of the carpet and settee, seems to work pretty well

baking soda and hot water worked for me when potty training my son. I have taken the precaution of having wood flooring now thought ready for when i potty train my daughter

A lot of the replies here seem quite good. Just do your best and perhaps when shes potty trained,(which hopefully wont be long now) you can replace the carpet if its only a small bedroom

you will never get rid of the smell 100% really. My dog used to wee on our new best rug! my mother in law has an industrial carpet cleaner and it never really got rid of it we threw it away. the smell will always be present and with the heat etc it will highlight it even more x

Thank you everyone ever so much. I've given it another scrub by hand but by using cleaning fluid to get rid of pet urine smells in combination with Mosaic's excellent advice. Seems to have done the trick (for now) and the carpet has come up a treat as it was a good quality one. Has now got a very different odour - of citronella which is quite pleasant. Will see how it stands up to the test when (or if) the warm weather returns...........xx

diluted white vinegar. This works on cats pee, so I should imagine it will do the job for you. It has loads of uses, including cleaning mirrors!
