AS he's working I don't think so.
Is he near to a dental teaching hospital? They offer free emergency treatment. (Patients might be treated by a final year student but they're always under the direct supervision of a fully-qualified dentist. When I lived in Sheffield I used the service at Hallamshire Hospital several times myself).

Otherwise phoning 111 can put him in touch with an NHS dentist who provides emergency care:

If he phones his own dental surgery there should be a recorded message giving a number for the emergency dentist on duty.

Ok just checked and he isn't registered with any dentist and is climbing the walls in agony. Help??
As suggested above, he needs to phone 111. They'll know all of the dental resources available in his local area.
as Chris says, phone 111
From the NHS website:
"If you require urgent care, you will only need to pay one Band 1 charge of £19.70. Most urgent treatments can be done in one appointment. However, if more than one visit is required and you return to the same dentist to complete your urgent treatment, the Band 1 urgent charge is all that you should pay".

And his dad won't pay?
You're talking about your older son...sorry!
Same thing happened to my son (age 27) there was no emergency NHS dentist available so he had to pay private £35.

I've three sons - this is the 22 yr old x
could you let us all know how what caused his tooth to snap please.i'm interested
he might want more than just the basic treatment if a tooth has snapped in half (assuming it's a visible one)
I broke a molar last Wednesday - nasty shard of half a tooth hanging down. I hadn't registered with a dentist since returning to France. My fault, wishful thinking and huge reluctance to change dentist. 1st reaction was to wail that I needed a ticket to France to see dentist. Eventually calmed down and went to local practice. Stressed that I was pensioner and that their publicity says that they take NHS patients. Was firmly told that they have no more room for NHS at the moment, so had to book to have it fixed anyway. (Pain basically + risk of injuring cheek and tongue.)

They were very, very good. I went on Friday afternoon and all is solved, but it cost me £60. A quick assessment showed that (no fault of mine that in the '50's and '60's the dentists overdrilled) Denplan would ask £25 p.c.m. for cover. I can't afford that. I'm exploring other options and (in fear) trying to find an N.H.S. dentist.

Glad to hear of any free emergency help.
