Am I thick concerning Prams?

I am watching a 1950's movie and instead of using the word PRAM some old bird called it a PERAMBULATOR. After a quick wiki search I discovered pram is a shortened word for this.

Is the longer word ever in use, because although I am fairly intelligent, I have never heard of the term before. Am I alone in my ignorance of this word?

Nor am I an expecting parent, so have never posted in Pregnancy before

in my youth people knew where the word came from, but I never heard anyone actually say it, except when explaining this.
