I don't this for a fact at all, but I always assumed it was the fact you would be breathing the ammonia in as opposed to the skin contact, but I could well be wrong. Why not ring your midwife and give it a check? I think that there are some dyes that you can use ok.
It's nothing to do with the smell or the dye being absorbed into your skin it's to do with the way your hair and skin react during pregnancy.

Your hair becomes more porous and acts differently when hormones are raging within your body so a strand test is VITAL even if you have used the brand before. You might end up with a lovely green hue on your hair if you don't. Or you might end up with a nasty colour to that on the box.

Again, a skin test is also VITAL because whilst you may not usually be allergic or have a reaction when not pregnant, you could do when you are

So, do a 48 hour strand and skin test before you die at home. If in doubt go to the hairdressers :)

I thought it was because the hair absorbs the chemicals and they can then circulate round the body, but again, I am not sure so best to check.
OMG! That should have been DYE, not die

Sorry :)
PMSL @ Pink Kittens.... now that would be an extreme reaction!
I could start early labour with something like that!
