I don't think it's dangerous per se (I had this in both my pregnancies) but should be kept an eye on. By the way my swollen ankles disappeared completely as soon as I gave birth but I'm afraid I'm still prone to it in hot weather for example although I blame being slightly overwieght although not excessively so.
How far along are you? My ankles began to swell towards the end of the pregnancy, but I have a friend who had it all the way through. I would just elevate my feet and drink plenty of water (apparently drinking water helps flush out retained water and thus reduces swelling), but I have to admit even resting my feet as and when I could and drinking lots of water didn't seem to help much I'm afraid, although, like scotgal, my ankles and feet went down within 24hours of giving birth.

I had to buy a cheapy pair of velcro trainers 2 sizes bigger than I normally take as I couldn't get any of my shoes on, and as if it wasn't bad enough that I looked like I was wearing calipers, I couldn't even get the velcro to meet some days!!
My poor friend spent the entire winter (her little girl was born in February) wearing flip flops!
