I have one child too, an only son and he has never had any problems with it. Very grown up from an early age, but again resourseful and self contained. He has loads of friends too.
Sometimes I would like an older brother or sister to share with, particularly when I lost my parents and as a confidant. However, it doesn't always follow that siblings get on as I know full well from other relationships I see!!

Dad is an only child, Mum was almost 12 when her brother was born, so she feels like an only child...........I'm an only child and my son is an only child.
Some of the time I wanted a sibling.............some of the time I didn't...............most of the time, I wasn't fussed.
If it were to happen now, I'd be soooo embarassed...........:o/

One thing I will say is that people think that being an only child means being spoilt. Not the case. Perhaps we got or get a bit more materially but the expectations of parents or centred on us and I was certainly not spoiled in the discipline stakes and was expected to behave. I do think only children relate better to adults for that reason and often have better social skills and a far more developed vocabulary at a very early age.
I think of myself as an only child as I was almost 13 when Mum remarried and had my sister. I loved being an only child. Our son is an only child too, and he in turn has an only child. Mum always welcomed my friends in our home, and so did I. My son, nor I are "lonely people" which I think is potentially a big problem when it comes to social skills.

My parents were very outgoing horseshoes and always welcomed friends into our home and so loneliness was never a problem for me either. I was the same with my son. In fact it was invariably me that had the kids round to our house or played in our garden. We live very rurally, so I felt I had too. I know my son was never lonely. Because of our rural situation, he boarded from the age of 11 and had the time of his life. Definitely wasn't a clingy mum and he wasn't tied to my apron strings. Often it is thought that only children are molly coddled - maybe they are sometimes, but so are some children with brothers and sisters.
Hi, I grew up as an only child and was only ever spoilt with love, nothing material. I didn't mind being an only child when I was young but as when my (step) dad died a few years ago I really felt the weight of being an only child withmy mum become more dependent on me and no-one to share that, and the emotional stuff, with. In the last year I have traced a half brother and sister - the sister I have become incredibly close to very quickly and now feel truly blessed to have the best of both worlds !
