Is it possible to convert black and white photos into colour using Photoshop? Has anyone done it? TIA.

Yes, but they won't be 'real colour' - they might look weird...
From memory, select the photo and look at the options under 'image'
There might be one that says colorize or something simialr
No, not to full natural colour, but you can tint, adjust and add various effects via the Image Filter drop down menus...

You have to work with layers and layer masks. It can be done with results varying from okish to brilliant. There are a few tutorials out there, I'll see if I can find some.
