I had a 'real' baby........ ..as have you it seems....... .
What makes you think that there is any reason why that would qualify 'real' mothers to have any idea about what your doll is/isn't supposed to do?

I see suzanneb has posted before on the Family section about this.

The extra pictures of this one shows a screw in its back. From memory it was the potty and dummy having batteries in that made these dolls work.

I've just looked at my daughter's one from the early 1990s and that has two screw holes on the back at shoulder level and 2 holes underneath - as it only has one mouth hole I'm not sure what the point of the 2 holes is. I imagine the screws attach to whatever keeps the tube from mouth to bottom in place.
It has quite a bit printed on the back but no date. (Zapf, copyright Head, made in China, a serial number then Roedental and there's a little number at the top of the back.)
I don't suppose any of that helps but to find out if the tube inside is still ok dribble a measured amount of water in and see what comes out the other end. If it was supposed to cry it would probably have one of those `hole-y areas' on the back.
