Making sense of the chart is simple. You find your common ancestor and they are the key. You find your relationship to the common ancestor on one axis, the other person's relation to them on the other axis. That defines the needed row & column. Read off what is in the common square to find out your relationship.

Now you have the key you can use the chart for other family members too.
you go back to the first common ancestor and count down! cousins are on the same tier and second cousins are one down!
