I agree Nom, I never hit my children, they are well balanced and they don't hit their children.
Until the OP comes back to tell us exactly what happened there is no real prospect of giving him a proper answer.

Everything above is subjective opinion.
O-G, there are other ways to punish children besides smacking. I get lip from the stepchildren, but the moment I threaten to take a binliner into their bedroom and clear their toys, the soon comply. Bobjugs never hits his kids, and whilst they are cheeky little monkeys at times, they don't mess with him.
For a slap on the bum it's unlikley.

Punching and/or kicking which left a mark then yes, possibly. It would probably be helpful if this was the case if there were photos and a doctor had seen and recorded the injuries.

It really depends on the situation and how the injuries occurred.
Anyone who hits another person, either child or adult, could be charged with assault. It makes no difference what the relationship is between perpetrator and victim.
Sorry, but anyone who equates the "reasonable chastisement" allowed by law with "lashing out" and "violence" needs to leave the argument to the grownups.
Do you mean actual hitting or smacking?
// Yet again another example of why editing is necessary.// O.G You're not on your own.
//you are not allowed to hit nany ids these days//
Smowball >>Do you mean actual hitting or smacking?<< isnt smacking just a word for hitting with an open hand?
I've smacked my child....................amazingly she survived without the need for therapy.
My neighbour smacked my child once, but after I'd lifted her off the floor by her throat decided she'd never do it again.
hence the expression 'beat it like a ginger step child'
