I was thinking something similar yesterday. My Nan has taught me so much and the main thing was to never judge someone.
I remember when I was young a prostitute started drinking in our pub. I made a comment about it and Nan said 'her money is as good as everyone elses'

Besides that...she taught me how to book-keep, went to college to learn French so she could help us with our homework, pool, darts, typing....and just how to be a nice person.
I'm lucky to still have her...she's beautiful.

my maternal grans weirdest saying was i dont boil my cabbages twice, it took me ages to work out she meant" i dont repeat myself."
she also taught me how to knit , make christmas puddings and how to fall down stairs wearing bi focal glasses.
in the early 50s she was at deaths door, in the early 60s she would ride a moped 30 miles to visit us, i do miss the moped.

Those of you who knew your grandparents are very lucky and I hope you cherish well the memories you have of them.
Unfortunately I never met any of my grandparents as they had all died before I was born, but I am enjoying being a nana myself and I hope my little puddings remember that we always laugh a lot when we are together.

My grandother taught me to play cards - she enjoyed a little flutter so long as we were using dried beans as money. She also taught me to knit squares, so they could go somewhere and be made into blankets. She lived to 95, and was a vegetarian and teatotal. She lived with us for 5 years till she got to 90, and then went to a very nice nursing home. She was very interesting, with lots of amusing stories. I never really knew my other Granny, she died when I was two, and both grandfathers were dead before I was born.
Some lovely replies - I loved my Nan too she lived to be 96, and died back in 1996 but I still miss her, and I hope one day I will have the opportunity to have grandchildren and leave them with half as many wonderful memories as I have of my Nan. My grandad died on the same day I was born, and I think my nan was 60 and she never had another relationship with another man, as she said he was her one true love :-(
My Granny taught me how to gut and fillet a fish. How to skin a Congar Eel with a pair of pliers and how to skin a rabbit. My own Grandchildren are amazed that I know all the names of the wild flowers and they don't realise that they too have learned those names. They will find out when they take their Grandchildren for a walk. I danced round the kitchen with her as she sang 'Come into the Garden Maud' and 'After the Ball was Over - all with her very own unique words. She generally taught me how to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. She was patient and funny and just adorable. Many memories, many stories to tell.
