I have a pair of student grandson's above ankle length boots with long laces up the front and a side zip. I think the laces are more for decoration as the zip is used to get them on and off. However one zip has broken and I intend to see if they can be repaired economically. My question is about how to lace them up as I feel sure there is a correct way to enable them to be quickly removed in case of an accident. At the moment they are laced in such a way that they have to be loosened bit by bit from the top all the way down. My idea is that if the zip cannot be repaired maybe they could be permanently zipped closed and only the laces used to get them on and off. Very time consuming unless there is a quicker way of lacing boots. If this is posted under the wrong heading please advise me where to put it.

Would love to be of assistance, but my valet always saw to things like that. Unfortunately he has passed on.
I wanted to post "round his neck", but i am guessing that won't help.
Difficult to describe, but I'll try.

Put the laces through the bottom holes from the top, so that both ends of the lace are coming out underneath the lace holes.
Take one end of the lace and feed it through the opposite side top lace hole, so you have a long diagonal lacing.
Now take the other end of the lace and feed it through all the other lace holes across the way, not criss cross.
You should then have a lacing that looks like a cartoon scar with stitches across it....sort of....
This way should be easier to remove and in an emergency, the cross laces can simply be cut through for quick release.
Hope this helps.

These boots are a bit extreme, but he's lacing them the way I was trying to describe.
