what sort of recording equipment do you have?
Ask around anyone you know who is into music and see if they have a "Zoom" digital recorder or similar.
Does he want video or just the sound of the music? It makes a big difference to your options

Thanks for the suggestions we have tried on a laptop but when we play it back it isn't loud enough. We don't need any vision with it...
if it's on the laptop, couldn't you record it onto a disk?
you need yo use a plug in microphone rather than the laptops own one, and also play it back on proper speakers.

try NCH wavepad - free download.

you can adjust the recording to remove any hissing etc
Go to Maplin, PC world etc and they can sell you a reasonable quality USB mic very cheaply which will do for something which isn't vocal. You can record using a free software like Audacity or simply sometimes even get away with the built in sound recorder. With audacity you do have the option to clean up the sound and adjust levels so it might be your better bet.
It's not the world's greatest sound software but it does have a free option and is very easy to use. Make sure you save your recording to a common file type like .mp3 though or it won't be able to be played. You can download Audacity here:-
