14 Year Olds And Alcohol

Was chatting to a friend last night and told her I've got my 14 year old niece staying with me this weekend and I've no idea what to do with her other than watch inappropriate films and eat junk food.

She suggested we should get p1ssed together. She did laugh that off but added the worst that would happen is that she'd throw up in the loo and feel like crap the next day.

So it got me thinking, if one of your kids went to stay with someone you trust, how would you feel if they let the kid drink? I mean more than just a glass of wine.

I might be being a bit naive but knowing how sweet the my nieces friends are, I don't think any of them have ever had any real experience of drinking alcohol yet. There's certainly been no getting drunk on cheap cider in a park. I don't think she could hack it.

not got kids but wrong imo
If a 14year old came to stay with us, i would not even consider offering them alcohol.......their parents might not object.......but we would.
If any of my friends mentioned and advocated the use of alcohol with my 13 year old son they'd no longer be my friends, but none of them are like that anyway.

By the way, I'm not planning on doing that. I barely drink myself.

Part of our thinking was that she's is one day going to get absolutely plastered. I know I did when I was her age. So, let her have her first taste of being drunk at home, with you, where she can't get herself into any trouble.
it's wrong.

it's realistic that, given the opportunity, some (please note "some"!) 14 yr olds would drink alcohol/get drunk.. but it's an irresponsible adult who would condone such a thing.
What happens if she doesn't get plastered, stumble about and vomits everywhere and subsequently develops a taste for it at such an early age?

Highly irresponsible IMHO.
so wrong if the parents decide to allow a glass of wine then that is their choice but getting a 14 year old pissed is wrong
At 14 years old I could have champers, or some nasty spirit like tia maria, malibu or bacardi and coke (lots of coke!) on special occasions (birthdays, new year, christmas. It was never not allowed, I just don't think my mum wanted to waste her good wine on me at that age :c)

By 16 I was trusted to drink like an adult (an adult who doesn't drink just to get pizzed) and so going to the pub with friends was never something I think my parents worried about massively.

By 17 mum seemed to think it was acceptable for her to share the good wine with me :c)

She'll doubtless have intercourse one day too.

Would you advocate her having her first sexual encounter in a nice, comfortable environment with someone you know, just so it's 'safe'?

Of course you wouldn't!!
I let my kids drink. It's very controlled.
Two of my friends are french and wine with dinner has always been part of their lifestyles. I think the more something is hammered home as 'you must not do this until you are of this age' then the more tempting it looks personally.
i think its up to the parents not another person to decide how their child is introduced to alcohol
'inappropriate films' seems worse than 3 glasses of wine
Here's hoping that she's just been listening to girls at school, and just repeating what they say, perhaps wanting to try it, can't with her parent and thought she might chance her arm with you? - Don't take that the 'wrong' way, from me or her - no doubt she thinks of you as a 'cool' aunty else she wouldn't have suggested it.

Lol, chill out Chilldout, I did say I wasn't actually going to do it. I'd rather have a cup of tea any day.

I just wanted to put the thought out there.

Tambo, really?

Spikey, the conversation was with my friend, not my niece. She knows nothing of it. And I'm sure she would never suggest anything about drinking to me.
Just out of curiosity what do you deem to be an inappropriate film for a 14 yr old?
Question Author
Things with too much swearing in them. Like Kick Ass or Keith Lemon.
blue films ?
