Adoption Question

In 1939 my Uncle was killed aged 18 flying with the RAF. His fiancé was pregnant but when she had the baby left him with my Grandmother and necer saw him again. i expect this was not that uncommon during the war years. He is now in his 70s and today he said he didn't know if he was adopted! He changed his name by deed poll sometime ago, so perhaps that indicates he isn't adopted. He recalls a big black car driven by a female chauffeur calling at the house now and again, and 2 gentlemen in suits went into the house to talk to Grandmther and after about 20minutes they would call him in and ask how he was etc etc. he hasn't a clue who these people were. How does he find out if he was ever formally adopted. T.I.A.

Yes he does, but it has his surname at birth on it.

I would write to the address shown and explain his needs

I've had a look and there doesn't seem to be provision for someone trying to find out if they are adopted. It's for trying to find relatives or getting a copy of a birth certificate etc etc, but I'll suggest he writes to them, certainly. Thanks again MM x

it would be a starting point if he explains he is uncertain whether or not he was adopted then they can point him in the right direction or perhaps check it for him...if he sends copy of birth cert and any addresses etc he recalls from childhood

perhaps these men in suits were from some kind of charity that was financially helping grandma and they were just checking ??? maybe even from RAF benevolent society helping orphans of war...?? just a thought
