I always have several books on the go at the same time but it took me a whole year to finish The Lord of the Rings because with the mound of unusual names I had to keep going back to remind myself who was who.

I never read the ending before I reach it.

'The Warrior Chronicles' - from which 'The Last Kingdom' tv series is sourced - is (at present) 13 books long. At the beginning of each is a glossary of the names of places as they were called then and are now known as. I did find myself flicking back to the beginning of the book from time to time just to understand where 'we' were. Sometimes, of course, it was quite obvious; Snotingaham, for example.
