yeah I wondered a bit - BUT - then your qq should be more child-centred: a child is labelled as smart-Aleck, then what?
or even is it harmful ?

does it make a child wish not be intellectual - as in this can be turned on and off.

oh - - OK - - well in that case:

God it is only the English who see intelligence in their kids as a bad thing.... Chinese and Indians dont ....

It would be good to follow them prospectively ( like seven up ) - 500 smart alecks and what is their fate? - in lit - look backs show that great authors Austen and Dickens, werent infant scribblers. Their infant scribbles are called juvenalia and dont show signs of promise.

Jim 350 - I am sure scored 100 at skool and then scored 100 in maff papers at uni - but mathematicians arent usually creditted with being smart alecks. Oh yes ! my nephew ( maff at Cge) managed to get sent out of his A level class....I impressed on him that he was there to learn and not to irritate the teachers.

My brother was disruptive in class- but that was because he was failing and wished to cover up the guilty secret. We all of course knew

There are many reasons for a child being a 'smart alec', yours is one, but clearly not the only one.
