I like boho/folksie/vintage clothes and I wear pale green frilly dresses with brown boots. She'll say, "Why can't you dress more like everyone else and more worldly?" Well, I like my dress sense as it's very much "me". I think deep down because I'm single it'll make men less attracted to me by continuing to dress how I do. I live with her currently. How can I get round this?

Treacle you sound unique and lovely. Parents, especially mums, are rarely happy with what their children, yes at 51 you are still her child, wear ;-) Because you dress how you 'feel' you will eventually attract someone who feels the same -if you want to that is. Being individual with the character to wear what you want not what you think you should wear is...

You dress however you feel comfortable.

Nailit, seriously? I'm sure there are many people in their 50s who live with a parent(s).
Carry on as you are. There's a lid for every pot
^ I think this is another situation where you are going to apologise in the morning..
Nailit, if you wouldn't speak to a stranger that way...then don't do it on here.
Treacle, be yourself, be an individual...its seems harder than ever to do that lately.
Just say that you don't tell her how to dress, and she can't tell you how to dress. Explain that you are comfortable with how you dress and that's all that matters as far as the clothing situation goes.

that's what they do - even when in advanced Alzheimer's...my Mater having indicated 'when is it due' as to my belly, even though I am on a diet. Just grin and bear it, even laugh about it - they're not going to change, not at their age.
Nailit - treace may not be able to afford to move out, she is single so therefore only one wage coming in.

She may not live in a 'cheap'area. If i was not married i wouldnt be able to afford our house or even to rent somewhere on my own.

You live at the cheaper end of the Country in a Council flat. Those are not available for single ladies where i live.
Just tell her to mind her own business lol.

Thank you all (well, nearly all! ☹ ) for your helpful responses.
From now on I'll wear what I want when I want.
