It is not wrong per se, since he is quite entitled to ask you.  However, it gives you a good indicator of what he wants and it is possible that you are not compatible.  If you have to ask "is it wrong", it is most probably wrong for you.  Sounds as if you have sound instincts.  Now have the confidence in them.
