I am not a big church goer at all so please dont shoot the messenger......
As my boyfriends family told me when I was at a niece's christening whilst I was pregnant,
"children who aren't christened will go to hell"
My response was,
"well, I'll be there first waiting for him" (as I'm not christened either).
Guess it depends whether you believe all the religious stuff or not as to whether it makes a difference.

I can confirm the godparent thing:
I am catholic (they're the worst... ;o) ) and my son has been christened last year.
We only needed proof of one godparents baptism.
The second could be any religion, or none at all.
The question would rather be, what's the point, since the godparent's 'job' is to help bring up the child in the chosen faith.
On the whole I don't think it's a big deal any more these days.

i have 5 godchildren, varying in ages from 29 to 4, and have not once been asked if i'm christened. i believe these days it's more to do with lifestyle choice than religeous belief. neither of my two children are christened, nor was i married in church. i would agree, these days it's no big deal and seems to be more about having a party afterwards.
i chose not to have my daughter christened, for my own reasons. Sadly she died and i then decided that at her cremation i wanted someone from a religous background to assure me that she was in safe and was in heaven. The funeral directors really struggled to get a priest to conduct her cremation, due to that fact that she hadn't been christened. One came to see me and was very rude and stated no major details could be said about her at the service as it was 'just a set service for the unbaptised child'. Neddless to say i didnt use him! They were trying to punish me for not having any 'faith' in the first place. In the end the only priest who would do it was a retired one. He was fantastic and did my little girl proud. He believed that God would never turn away a 'beautiful little girl' , i now feel at ease.
