You need to ring around a few local dentists, explain the problem and ask them if they can help him out. Dentists these days are very well aware of the *drill* phobia etc and are very sympathetic and able to offer a much better service than the one your partner probably had as a child (when the problem started, I expect).
I had fillings with NO anaesthetic when I was a kid - no wonder I was put off going to see the dentist until I was in my early 40's when I discovered that modern dentistry does not approve of this sort of treatment !

Zzxxee - I always have sedation when I go to the dentist's. It costs me 90 a time - but SO worth it. Some dentists'll charge you for the sedation, but then you can have any treatment needed on the NHS, which'd make the total a lot less than if you were paying for it all. My own dentist'll also stagger the payments for patients who may not be able to afford the sedation costs in one go. I hope your partner gets sorted out.
Wat a wimp.....dentists are painless today......the only bit that hurts is the bill!
NHS have waiting lists...too long for aching filling.
Modern dentists apply anniseed to chill the gum in preparation for freezing by needle...no pain, no gain!
I pinch my leg (brain is confused at pain location) and release pinch when finished. Mind over matter......tell him to stop being a woss!

You JEST, terambulan! I was always fine at the dentist's until one time, even after 5 injections, I could feel everything that was being done. Ever since, anaesthetic doesn't take on me properly, so that's why I'm sedated first. If anyone thinks it's just all been in my mind, or some phobia which's stopping the stuff from working - they're wrong. When I had my first baby, the epidural didn't work either, even when topped up. Thinking it was a fluke, I opted for one when my second child was born, and the same thing happened.
