Pleased that you got some replies to your question P.Beer, but it is usual to respond to answers on your original question by clicking on 'post an answer'. By putting up another 'question' you will really confuse a lot of people who won't know what on earth you're on about, and annoy some people because you have 'bumped' their genuine question onto another page.
For my part neither confused nor annoyed, but think PB is very polite to respond.
PB if you don't know the regiment, it is remotely possible that the Army Record Centre can locate him from name, approximate date of service and any locations that you can provide.
Thank you Lil O' lady!
Glad I didn't confuse you! Being a novice can be
problematic (I guess) Think I've got the hang of
it now!
Again, I will try your suggestion, thank you
I have to agree with spudqueen here, because I didn't see your original post. If you've been trying to trace a deceased relative or friend's whereabouts, the War Graves Commission helped us to trace someone who died during WW1. We had nothing to go on, apart from a name, and out of the blue, I received a letter from a chap in the US, who said he'd do a search for me! He duly did, and we now know that our relative, who was an officer, is buried at Morchies Cemetery, near Calais.
