Sorry but this is weird...
Of my nana & grandad, my grandad died young and my nana never got over it, she has said that she wants to be buried in the same grave as him when it's her time. She seems to have set up some kind of funeral plan as well so we all comply with her wishes.
Thing is, he was small & slim when he died and so was she but she's now morbidly obese, 77, with heart problems and is unlikely to loose weight. If she wants to be buried will she need a wide coffin, will this fit in the hole where my grandad is buried - he was buried I think12ft under leaving space but, will they need to widen the hole? She has made it clear this is the only option and wont be cremated.

As a granddaughter I can't discuss it with her, I thought about asking my aunties (her daughters) but don't want to upset them, I am worried though that I'm the only one who has thought of this potential problem and maybe it's best getting it sorted out. Or am I just being weird and should just not think about it.....?

I think it would be a good idea to ask the question of an Undertaker. They should know about these things.

are there any undertakers out there who can advise?
Ask the keeper at the cemetary. Am sure your Nan can be accommodated in both coffin and grave.
The plot will be able to accomodate -dont worry.

Just - as the prevous poster said- see the undertaker -undercover so to speak -well we're all gonna peg it and better sorted now than later -saves a lot of hassle when you really need it.
Good clear thinking on your behallf xx !!!
Our Ethel was a funeral director. If she sees this question, I'm sure she will be able to help.
i would worry more that there are enough funds to open the family grave as it is very costly
I am sure that a couple of Cemetery guys with shovels could make the grave a foot or two wider.

They must have come across this problem in the past?
dont think they use the shovels now its diggers.
Don't worry ajrow - Drisgirl's right. I had the unfortunate job of attending he funeral of a very good friend not so long ago. She wasn't just obese, but excessively so. The casket was made to accomodate her, although, unpleasant as this may be, once fluids've drained from a body, this shrinks considerably. In my friend's case, she was cremated, but if a coffin's made to a certain size, then I assume the burial plot'd be catered for as well.
I beg your pardon babybow.

OK, shovel diggers : - )
