i have no idea why other people apart from ethel cant answer this q but as below, the son could name whoever he wanted as next of kin

I agree - you can have anybody as your next-of-kin, you do not even have to be related.

having read your post, i see the son is dead. Why do they need to know next of kin? is it who arranges the funeral? or is it to do with inheritance?

Yes, whoever he chooses.

However, if he is a minor it will very much depend on the circumstances who has the right to give to consent to medical treatment and so on.
