If a couple split up ( together 18 months) and have a 6 month old baby together, should the father provide a roof over his ex's and baby's head? Or simply pay maintenance?

If the couple was married, then I would imagine it would be up the the Courts to decide what the finacial settlement should be.On that basis then maintenance could include a contribution towards a place to live.
i would say pay maintenance and assist with accomadation depending on your income. It all depends on the circumstances and reasons for breakup in that if you had an affair why should he put a roof over your head as well as maintenance. At the end of the day you are both adults and both parents. Perhaps you could get a job to supplement your income and gain more indeprndance
Legally, all he is obliged to do is pay maintenance, regardless of whether you are married or not. Single parents are entitled to housing and council tax benefits dependent on income. Child Tax Benefit should also take into account that you are now a one parent family. If all else fails, the CSA are very helpful people.

Hope the above helps.
He has a responsibility to support his child. Why should it be his responsibility to keep a roof over his ex's head. I'm assuming she is an adult and therefore capable of earning money to support herself. She has joint responsibility to support the baby too.
Also the CSA are absolute pants. Only use them if they are an absolute last resort cos you'll probably end up with no money cos they'll **** it up
