Hi not sure where to post this, so here goes. My mum has been offered sheltered housing, she owns her own flat with no mortage. Its not in the best of condition for selling and at the moment we don't think she will get much for it. We were wondering if our son moved in and paid the going rate for rents would she be able to live off it would she get help with any short fall, the average rent is £320. We do not want her to be worse off, and at least she would be getting a regular income and we know the flat would be looked after.
thanks
i think it's extremely unlikely she'll get help with shortfall - after all she owns her own property, and if she's not going to sell to pay for her extra care, then that money would be just lining the pockets of whoever is going to inherit her house on her death. If she needs sheltered accommodation, is she unwell enough to get attendance allowance? and would that cover the shortfall (you don't mention how much she is going to be paying in rent)
Thank you for your replies. She is not unwell, her rent is £37 a week. I am going to the CAB next week to see what they say. Houses here are not really selling and she would still have council tax etc if the house is on the market and not selling for a while, I asume. I am new to the ins and outs of house selling so will have to find out everything and see what is best for her. I don't want her to be worse off.
