Washing Mushrooms?

I always wash mushrooms before I cut them up, and dab them dry.

A couple of people I know say that they never wash them!

Do you wash them before cooking?

no. If they are the cheap ones that come with earth attached i just pick it off

from what I have read in the past mushrooms should only be wiped and never peeled

And don't worry about any muck on your mushrooms - for commercial crops, the compost they're grown in has been steam pasteurised to kill off any bad bacteria.

I used to own a "mushroom brush. It was like a nailbrush but softer. Lord knows where it's gone. I never wash mushrooms.

should just gently wipe them with a lightly damp tissue - mushrooms are so highly absorbent of H2O

What's the point?
Mushrooms grow in Sugar, particularly magig mushrooms.
Hence the saying 'this is good Sugar'.

Not unless they are so encrusted with dirt, i have heard some who peel them, but that seems a bridge too far.

Pusskin I don't wash any of the fruit or vegetables I buy. Apparantly I will decompose slower in the grave due to all the chemicals : )
