I don't have one, never have, nor do I know anyone who does. Given there are many varieties of these you need to define what you mean by 'as good as'. Are you looking at hand held ones or those that are fixed to the wall?
Yes i have a Tesco one which i've had ages & is the best thing i've ever bought. Has a knife sharpener at the back also. Cost me about £10.
i've had a kenwood free standing one for about 25 years, never had a moments trouble with it and if it packed in i'd defo buy another. whilst it's not an essential bit of kitchen kit, it does save a bit of effort.

Thanks Ill look into it. Ethandron it seems that all the old kettels, can openers, ovens etc... last for years and these days the new tech filled household gadgets have a shelf life of 5 minutes. I can now understand the phrase "They don't build them like that no more"
you're probably right, although i don't think the design of the one i have has changed much, if at all. perhaps they know they're on to a winner :)
we've had a Kenwood, the same as ethandron since 2000 when I had a stroke (try using a can opener on handed) it's used every day and we've never had any trouble
Yep, they are. Had mine years and it's indispensable, as I struggle with can openers due to being left handed. Can't tell you what brand it is, think its the cheapest Argos had to offer at the time.

That being said though, I don't understand why all cans aren't ring pull ones by now.
We bought a b attery one a shown on tv. Absolute rubbish!
If you want to get one, I would recommend the free-standing type (mains-operated) rather than the battery-operated hand-type that mrsmurphey has "issues" with. My father has had the mains-type for donkeys years- never failed to work properly.

Thanks I've decided to get the electric one as recommended by all of you.
