Has anyone tried it, and if so, did it compare favourably with Hellman's?

Yes, and yes. Obviously it's cheaper too.
Why not make your own?

LOL Rick. I guess some things are an acquired taste. :o)

Thanks for the link, DT.

Kate, I've never tried mayonnaise with herbs. Will look out for that too.
now there you are, vallaw is right - and homemade mayo is delish!!!

Doesnt take long either - esp if you are making it for a special occasion - double the strating quantities by the way as it will soon be "lapped" up
even better, mrs c, just chop up some lovely fresh herbs that you like and add those to a mayo......

My husband made some recently and tbh he loved it, but I didn't think it was anywhere as nice as Hellman's.

use a good mayo not salad dressing.....italian flat parsley works better.

If making your own, use a light oil - extra virgin olive oil is too strong. Experiment with different oils, vinegars and citrus juices to suit your own taste - also different herbs. I think the gorgeous texture of home-made is well worth the effort.
Exactly eddie, and I have heard that a lot of own brand products eg cornflakes is commissioned from the same place that makes the branded versions - I heard Tesco cereal comes from the same place as the branded boxes.
Have tried the Aldi stuff. Horrid. And we usually shop at Aldi's. Most of their products are absolutely fine/great. But not the mayo. It's just about the only thing I get that's branded.... i.e. Hellman's. Sorry Aldi!
I have one recipe for potato salad based off a variation of a Michael Smith salad. I dont have the exact quantities but i dont think it matters.

800 to 1.5kg of small/new potatoes cut boiled in their skins

drain the potatoes, then sprinkle a little salt and fresh ground pepper on them and stir.

Add a good quality basalmic vinegar and let cool.

Towards the end of cooling add any fresh herbs like chives, lemon thyme, thyme, or even a little rosemary - or a mix. And if you like finely chopped garlic, add.

Then add a splodge of maple syrup and stir.....

Add apples that have been sliced and sprinkled in lemon juice (to keep them from browning). If you like lemon some finely diced lemon rind is fine..

Mix mayo with some yoghurt, (I like black pepper in too), you can add creme fraiche if you wish, but I work 50-50 mix and stir into the mix......

and yum yum (for a bbq or summer dinner)
or try an easier version, which is boiled new potatoes and then add chives, mayo and salad cream to the desired taste. Can add hard boiled egg, capers etc if needed (but i dont)
always have to make a huge bowl for parties and BBQs
I'm a salad cream person, and it must be Heinz. I can't believe a thread about Mayo has 33 answers.

agree about salad cream - micmak's contribution should be reported for being profane and abusive

Salad cream's a bit too sweet for me.
A basic Rose Marie seafood sauce is mayonnaise mixed with tomato ketchup. If I use Co-op or Tesco mayonnaise from the fridge, the mayonnaise forms small lumps that are difficult to break down and mix with the ketchup. With Morrisons mayonnaise this doesn't happen. The mayonnaise blends smoothly, and so it's my preferred choice. Hellmans I don't like - there's an oiliness to it that puts me off, and I think it's well overpriced, too. I'll give Lidl's a go.
