Cups and tablespoons.

It's not very often that I bake and one of the reasons is because I find the amounts of the ingredients unclear.
How do I convert into either ounces or grams when it says
6tbsp of butter or three quaters of a cup of light brown sugar

You don't. Providing you possess a cup and a tablespoon it should be easy.
To make matters worse, it's different for American and Australian recipes!
agree with mike - if it's confusing just buy a tablespoon and a cup
Most cookery books have a page of 'equivalent' measures.

Otherwise, try googling.
Ah, that's why my kangaroo soufflé turned out all wrong.
if you are going to convert, you have to convert all the ingredients to the same kind, don't mix metric, imperial and cups as that way lies disaster....there are loads of online converter sites.

Was it a Stargazey soufflé, mike? If you had the feet pointing up then I'm guessing that's where you went wrong! :p

Missprim, there are lots of conversion charts online, but I too would just use a table spoon and a cup if that's what the recipe states.

Thanks ubasss those links are just what I was looking for.
Speaking practically, you can insert the word ''roughly'' in front of almost all quantity measurements in recipes. Think of those cooks on TV who you see measuring things by handfuls.
