Regarding my previous question about Brown and Mild where I got some great answers, my dad was talking about it again and said he used to drink Whatneys (sp?)
Vaguely remember Watneys, (used to manage pubs and Hotels) I know they made a bottled Pale Ale, think they also made Bitter and Mild on draught too!..........long time ago now!......don't think you can still buy it sorry!....last time I remember seeing it was probably in the 70s........
Ah... Watneys Red Barrel. Used to be able to get 7 pint party cans of it in the late sixties and seventies. One of the first keg beers in that it was filtered and pasturised before being put in the keg. Seems it was discontinued in 1997.
From Wiki:
A 3.9% abv pale lager with the name Watneys Red Barrel was sold by the Sleeman Brewery until 1997 and a 6.0% beer with the same name is still brewed by Alken-Maes
I've googled, I've asked Jeeves and I've Wiki'd, even heard that somewhere in Belguim still sells it and one company might be able to get it so I've emailed them.
Missed your other thread maisie so excuse me if I'm repeating someone. I remember Watneys Red Barrel my Dad used to like that years ago. I used to love Makesons Stout and Jubilee Stout. Haven't seen any of them for years. Now I fancy one.
Alken-Maes still do a beer called Red Barrel, but as it's 6% rather than the original 3.9% I doubt it will taste the same.
However, after 3 or 4 pints of 6%, who gives a damn. hic, hic.
lo Askyourgran, no you have not repeated anything the ale I was recommended was Mann's ale but it was only tonight we were talking and he said he used to drink whatneys
maisie, sorry but it won't be the same, I read that it was about 3.9 per cent, and now it's 6.0 per cent, so it won't be anything like he remembers!......be much stronger, and the flavour is bound to be different!.........
