Having decided to try goose this year I ordered it from a local butcher today. I had no idea of the price though - £70 for a 12lb bird - you could have knocked me down with a feather, is this normal?

Completely normal. Last year I was paying in the region of £80 for 5kg birds.
My OH has just bought a free range turkey to serve 8-9 people for £12 from Marks and Spencer. It was at its 'use by date' so now it's in the freezer!

Thanks eccles, at least I'm not being done I suppose.
That's a bargain kathy!
They are not mass produced so you do pay a premium for the low intensity rearing ( a good thing INMHO). I have to admit that last year I was a little flustered at how much they were costing (I was buying 8.....only one got used!!!)
we had goose last year for the first time...never again! i found it to be over-hyped, over-priced and absolutely not worth the time, money or effort. the best thing about it was the goose fat we collected for the roasties on new years eve!
back to a free-range turkey this year, although if it was just up to me, i'd buy a frozen ready-basted one from the supermarket as i don't think there's any difference in the taste and they're always succulent.
You can't beat a bit of goose, although pheasant is very pleasant. Problem with the plucking though...
I'm not a pheasant plucker...
Lidl's does a 4kilo young goose for 19.99-frozen.

Thanks pasta, you've got to laugh (hopefully) I've just read your post to my OH and his attempt at humour was ' but won't that come with big hooped earrings!'
*splutter*!!!
