I've been asked out by a guy and I made the mistake of suggesting he come to my house and I cook him a meal. Problem is, I don't know anything very extravagant. Any suggestions? Way to a man's heart, and all x

Steak, Curry or Chilli con carne would be the way to my heart. Good luck !

You could always get a takeaway and then explain it was easier than cooking him something he might not like; most blokes love a takeaway. Then again, pjm007 is right: most guys do enjoy steak, curry or chilli. Sorry if I offend any guys who disagree, but if I'm wrong, please send your suggestions ASAP so that slimfandango can look forward to a great first meal together!

Pizza's easy: if you haven't got time to make your own base, buy one, then pile on whatever you fancy. That way, you can make a few variations too: vegetarian, white meat only, etc.

Let us know how it goes!

Firstly as andy hughes says - try and fish (hah - couldn't resist the pun!) to find out what he likes/dislikes.  Secondly - keep it simple and within your limits - there's nothing worse than spending hours over a hot stove for the food to be mediocre.  I have done this myself before now, and I can cook.  Thirdly, doing something in advance is always great - tastes better and saves you flapping around all day - curry and the chilli con carne are good examples of this.

Finally, have a bluddy good night and make sure there's LOTS of wine!!

Happy Cooking!

Most guys love a roast dinner and I think they're so easy to do for dinner parties. Just bung it all in the oven and then drink and chat. Just keep an eye on the timing for your vegies.

pasta and sauce is pretty easy, quick to do so doesn't take up your whole evening. buy some fresh tortellini from a supermarket, get a tin of tomatoes, a courgette, some mushrooms, some peppers, some chicken... throw it all in.

it's ideal if you don't know what he likes, as you can cook it with him there & so if he doesn't like mushrooms you can leave them out etc etc. just make sure you have lots of options!

besides, he'll be there for the company rather than the food so it doesn't matter that much! have fun on your date

Fajitas are really easy, tasty and don't require much work to cook, and what's more the toppings make it look impressive!.

Cut a couple of chicken breast fillets (or some rump steak) into strips. Mix up a marinade made with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon chilli powder, 1/4 teaspoon cumin, 2 cloves of garlic (crushed), 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, 2 tablespoons olive oil and 4 tablespoons lime juice or lemon juice. Pour this over the meat in a non metallic dish, cover with clingfilm and put in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

From any decent supermarket, buy some sour cream, some salsa and some guacamole for the toppings, and some flatbread tortillas - the large ones are best as you can fit more in them!

About an hour before he gets there, slice one onion and  a red and green pepper and mix these in with the marinated meat.

Prepare some grated cheese, shredded lettuce, and chopped tomatoes with a little salt  - these are your additional toppings.

When he gets there and he's had a couple of drinks, both of you go into the kitchen and you can stirfry the marinated meat/veg for about 5-6 minutes until the meat is cooked.

Dump some meat/veg on a tortilla, and top with some of the toppings then roll it up and eat with your fingers!

Hey isn't that what M&S is for? ;-)

you could probably feed him anything just so long as you cook naked
I think lasagne is a safe bet, but if you want the "...and all x", dont go heavy on the garlic bread!

Thanks guys. Fajitas it is. I'll let you know. If I don't burn it it'll be goodbye singledom, fingers crossed! xx
Fajitas topping list needs sweetcorn and kidney beans too!!  The Old El Paso kit, if safely hidden in the bin will sort you out without too much stress - and you'll look like a great cook! :-)  TIP - Don't overcook the fajita bit otherwise they don't bend properly.  Also - make sure you know how to wrap one; don't risk spilling the contents down your lovely outfit!
Thai Green Curry - very easy - boil a can of coconut milk then add diced chicken. Take chicken out once cooked and leave in a warm place. Add chopped aubergines in and some chopped corriander (fresh), a chopped green chilli , 1 crushed garlic clove and a spoon of green curry paste (go easy on this). Return chicken to pan for 5 mins. Serve with rice. It only takes about half an hour and looks like it took much longer and it tastes lovely.

Thanks a lot. It worked out pretty well with the fajitas. Pretty sizzling evening in the end!
