Smoked Gammon...

Just read another thread, and it made me wonder...

I've never actually done anything with my ham, just covered it in foil and whacked it in the oven. I've never thought to glaze it.

I've just read someone mention boiling it in Crabbies, which sounds absolutely delish! Could I do this in the oven though, and just pour some into the tray/oven dish?

And... could I still glaze it with honey and mustard, or would that be too much?

Thanks :-)

Oh wow, that sounds lush!

Thanks RH :)
im boiling it as its smoked to remove extra salt, normally boil it any way but not used to having a smoked one, but it was cheap! this year instead of water and spice i will use either coke or crabbies, boil for about an hour (have a pan big enough for once) then glaze with a marmalade honey and clementine mix, putting some of the clementine skins in the oven tray to. hubby likes a bread crust but will have to mix the crumbs into the glaze mix to make it stick!
We're trying this one this year

Something my mother used to do was to coat it in marmalde, and then roast it. She also boiled it first, with the zest of an orange in the water.
Sorry to be ignorant but what is Crabbies? My friend boils her gammon joint (unsmoked) in neat ginger ale - she says its so tender and sweet. I'm going to try mine like that this year.
Crabbies is alcholic Ginger beer ann, I've not thought about doing that with ham. I'm doing a peice of gammon for Christmas Day Boxing Day. I soak mine in cold water for 2/3 hours, pour off the water and refill pan with water to cover ham, with bay leaf 3 tblspoons sugar and a just a dash of vinegar boil up and simmer for 2 hours depending on size. Take out of pan and put into an oven dish, take off rind and cut the fat underneath into diamond shape and stud with one or two cloves (optional) smother with honey and put a small layer of water in the bottom of the oven dish. oven temp 180 for 20/25 mins to brown.
I like to boil mine first with some clementines, the I bake it smothered in marmalade!...........it's lush!.....
Sounds yummy Askyourgran - I suppose its similar to using ginger ale (Morrisons has their own on very cheap offer at the mo)
I might try the marmalade one some time it sounds lovely.
