I've just had my online grocery delivery.. guess which item was substituted? yep.. the turkey!

right, I have 6 for Christmas dinner, and most of us would prefer the dark meat. yesterday I went to a butchers and picked up an extra thigh joint.

so, the substitutes I've received are 2 turkey crowns weighing just over 2kg each. (it seems there should have been 3, but one is missing). so they're boneless, right? how many would one of them feed? or should I cook both?

and do you think I have a hope in hell of getting extra thigh joints today??

sorry, it's a slightly panicky ramble!

Well that's your goose cooked .. Ruddy fools substituting like that.

Look at the out-of-town turkey farms and give them a ring.
They are all over the place .. so you might be lucky.
A turkey crown isn't boneless.

1 2kg should feed 6 at average portion sizes, so cook 1 crown and 1 thigh joint for plenty all round
there should be more than enough in 2 crowns for 6 people

turkey farm?? actually, we probably have one near here somewhere, thanks :o)

hc.. not boneless? really? crap! right, one thigh joint in the freezer then, but I need more dark meat :o/
Surely you'll have enough there? Especially if you're also doing other meats, like ham etc.

Personally, i'd stretch what you've got out, and bulk it up with extra spuds and vegetables.
it has a breast bone I think (essentially the crown is just the top part of the turkey)
You should be able to get a thigh joint, or even a whole leg.
Give your local M&S a call - they had plenty here as of early this morning and they will hold one. It does mean joining the rugby scrum - the local farm ones (as Al suggested) would likely be better though

Good luck
Loads left at my local M&S too Sara. Personally I don't think you will need any more but if you are worried phone your local butcher and see if he can help?
I reckon you'll have enough - particularly if you do all the trimmings with them. However, if you want the dark meat, try the local supermarkets. I went to Sainsburys yesterday and there were loads of turkeys and they were still stacking the shelves. I was a bit worried I would get some ropey old bird, but got a lovely plump Norfolk Black.

You gotta admit though, that is substitution par excellence.

I wish I could click "like" to SC's comment :)
Offer to swap one of the crowns for a couple of legs from a neighbour, lots of folk don't care for the dark meat.

pmsl, S-C ;o)

B00, I'm not doing extra meats so will have to go out and fight over the turkey legs.. marvellous!

and Barmaid, it was a fair deal!

the eggs are broken, but that's not part of my panic.
I hate the dark meat! You can have mine x

Middle of no-where here .. and there are two places within 10 miles.
Nicer product at better price probably. I think they don't just have whole turkeys, either.
You think the supermarket ones were walking about yesterday?
Gosh first for me to be put in the non 'PC' bucket - Merry Christmas.
You are all being very helpful and practical as usual but sara I'd have gone flaming berserk if that happened to me, especially as I only like the 'leg and thigh'. What were they thinking.
I'd be thrilled technically its an upgrade
