Talked to my sis earlier she is doing nothing tomorrow night, then talked to a close mate, neither is he. Felt sorry they might be alone on NYE so I invited them round. I have some food, but will need to shop again. Was thinking starter, sorbet, main, sweet, cheese and biscuits and port.

For starter I have potentially scallops in a sauternes sauce - although I have just made RedHelen's chili tomato ice cream so I could do something with that. Any ideas?!

Main, I have no idea. Either filllet of beef topped with with mushroom gratin or chicken stuffed with wild mushrooms and pancetta in marsalla sauce. No idea about accompanients yet.

As for sweet, I have a lemon and sultana cheesecake in the fridge which I made yesterday. Probably ought to do a quick and easy extra sweet.

Me and my gob. Any ideas? Me and the OH are meant to be going out for the day tomorrow so I need something quick but impressive (both are "foodies"!).

what do you mean red? It's traditional to have a pot of soup and a pot of stovies on the go at Hogmanay - my mum used to do a pot of tripe too but I'd give that a miss!!
i dont relate stovies to halloween ?
me either anne :/
Going to be on my own, can I come round Barmaid?
Majestic - for scallops a Withers Hill @ £7-49, mid range Te Muna Road £10-99 and the Cloudy Bay at £20 - all the NZ whites are 20% off from their rrp at the moment (net prices quoted)

main course if beef or the chicken with haggis a good robust Rioja Riserrva CVN at £11-99 and very smooth....

and do you drink a sweet wine to go against the cheesecake....

Sibton, it wasn't down to me. I had intelligence from someone who is far better at these things than me!!! And she will remain completely nameless, although SHE knows who she is!

I think I will stuff chicken breasts with haggis and serve them in a whisky cream sauce. That will shut the scot up. By 9pm we will all be shedded anyway!
Royal Tokaji Late Harvest 2009 50cl Bottle £9-99 is a steal and will balance against that Cheese cake.

You still should get the M discount for 6 bottles or more as well.....

DT, some nice wine suggestions there, thanks. Like I say, I will be parking at Majestic tomorrow and nipping in there for my wine.

Wow thank you. I'd settle for sausage rolls and mince pies. Have a great evening and a very happy new year, hopefully less hectic and tiring
must be peculiar folk in Cruden bay red :o)

We always had stovies (i'm from Edinburgh) so did OH (he's from the Borders) and that's what we will be having at our neighbours - he's from aberdeen and she's from Fife - so think it is quite widespread.
a pot of tripe eh... :O
I think the theory is that you have big pots of stuff that you keep warm and as people are out first footing there is always something hearty and warming to eat that'll soak up the alcohol!!
yeah cazz - think it was cooked in milk (would that be right?) and would be served with chunks of bread - as was the soup.
Sounds a lot of palaver!

Lock the door, switch the light off, pretend you're not in :-)
Barmaid, that chicken dish is called Chicken Balmoral - it's yummy - but I do know my Scots relatives that they don't normally eat until after The Bells....!
I think I would feel a little queasy trying that :/

We did first footing a few years ago at my farmhouse in Bury. I had loads of people to stay and at midnight some of them cleared off outside and came in with bits of coal!

There was me thinking "where's the sodding booze"!
Coal, and a single malt, is ideal....

Barmaid, if you're going to Waitrose, just buy ready made and dish it up in posh china - don't slave!
