Spaghetti

I've found an old packet in the cupboard that says use before Aug 2010 but it looks ok to me, just the usual dried durum wheat variety. Is it ok to use or should I chuck it?

Personally, I would use it - but it could take a bit longer to cook.

Why risk your health and a perfectly good meal for the sake of a few pence, chuck it out or cook it for your dog.

Some people empty spaghetti into those tall jars, and take bits out, and top it up.

Some of the spaghetti in there could be years old.

I think it will be fine.

Incidentally, dried pasta doesn't have a "use by" date - it has a "best before" date. Completely different.

I have entered my seventh decade without ever looking at a use by date on any type of pasta. Come to that I rarely look at dates on anything in the stock cupboard.

It won't soften sufficiently on cooking. But there won't be anything dangerous about it.
I know, I tried it once.

As long as no moisture gets to it, it'll practically last forever, just like plain biscuits will.

I would not put the dogs at risk, their digestive system is very different than ours. They would happily eat a rotted maggot riddled piece of meat with little problem, not that I would have such a piece of meat like that to give them.
